National Minimum Wage

National Minimum Wage – Rates due to increase from 1/4/16

The government has made changes to the National Minimum Wage (NMW) Act, which will come in to force on 1st April 2016. The revised changes will affect the minimum wage of adults who are 25 years of age and over in the UK. These workers aged 25 + who are on the current minimum wage of £6.70ph will see an increase in their wage by 50p. The government has called these new changes to the Act as a National Living Wage (NWL).

The new minimum wages starting from the 1st April 2016 are:

  • Age 25 and over – £7.20ph (National Living Wage)
  • 21-25 – £6.70ph
  • 18-21 – £5.30ph
  • Under 18 – £3.87ph
  • Apprentices – £3.30ph

What Does this Mean and What Can You Do

The amendments to the Act that will come into force in April 2016 could possibly have an impact on current employees who are within this age category (25+) and receiving the minimum hourly wage. There is concern that employers might unfairly dismiss their employees, in order to avoid paying them the new national living wage.

Furthermore, from April 2016, if you think that your hourly wage rate has not increased to the new NLW then you will be entitled to bring a claim of unlawful deduction from wages.

How We Can Help

If you are dismissed and you think that this is because of the new changes to the national minimum wage in 2016, or if your employer pays you less than the rate you are entitled to, then you may be entitled to claim compensation.

We will be able to advise you and asses your situation to see if you have a case and the likely value of your unfair dismissal compensation.
